Steve de
Shazer and his colleagues at the Brief Family Therapy
Center in Milwaukee, USA, developed ‘Solution Focused
Therapy’ and they claim that the model evolved from
their clinical practise.
Steve de Shazer was influenced by the unique and
strategic approach to therapy developed by Milton H.Erikson.
The work of Erikson convinced de Shazer that it was
possible to work strategically and briefly with
individuals and families and there is a unique solution
to their own unique difficulties .
Milton H. Erickson was not interested in classification
and diagnosis,he was interested in getting the change
the client wanted. He believed people are changeable,
they already have the resources to change. The therapist
design a particular approach for each difficulty and for
each client.
Erikson was a pioneer in brief approaches to therapy in
the 1940s. He showed that therapist could get quick
results by focusing on goals, looking for things the
client was already doing . His approach considers
therapy a success when clients change what they do.
Milton H.Eriksons' ideas formed the basis for many
therapeutic schools as well as the ' Solution Focused
Therapy'. According to 'Solution Focused Therapy' model,
the client has all the resources, skills and knowledge
to make their life better. In the model the therapist
and client devote a greater proportion of time to
solution construction than to problem exploration.
In other forms of therapy, solution focused therapists
say, problem focused talk distracts attention from
solutions or exceptions. During a solution focused
interview problem free and solution talk is encouraged.Instead
of thinking about the past and what went wrong and why
it happened, the emphasis is on future and what lies
ahead. Solution focused therapist pays more attention to
when the problem doesn't happen than when it does.It is
this concentration on exceptions to the problem that
makes the model different from most other models of
therapy/counselling.
It is a short term, goal focused therapeutic approach
which helps clients change by constructing solutions
rather than dwelling on problems. It acknowledges the
competence and strengths of people.
